Taylor Swift – Love Story
This video has a few genre characteristics. Period Drama and fairytale type genre’s. This also hasa Shakespeare overlap as the lyrics and narrative are based on the Romeo & Juliet “love story”. And also the way Taylor Swift is stood in a windowed archway gazing at the camera in some ways. Using Laura Mulvey’s Gaze theory, at some points she is gazing into the camera in a flirtatious and sexual way but at other times she is looking away from the camera, allowing her self to be vunerable and to be gazed at my the male dominant figure.
Relationship between the lyrics and visuals are illustrative. There is a narrative throughout and taylor & others are performing. There are certain shots where Taylor Swift is standing around or walking around and posing whilst singing the song. Even though the lyrics are outside of the narrative, some parts of the lyrics are where she talks to other characters throughout the story. So it is a cross over between a performance shot and the narrative.
As Taylor Swift is signed to a record label it is most likely required for her to be involved with a lot of close up shots. This video demonstrates perfectly how the singer is not necessarily there for her talent, but as a brand to be shown off in the video.
In a lot of shots in the video you see the main characters looking into the camera and around the area in which they are in. This has been portrayed using Laura Mulvey’s Gaze theory. The characters are looking away from the camera for the majority of the video so they can be examined by the viewer of the video, gazed at per say.
There is almost definitely an intertextual link between this video and Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.
